Building Energy Science II- Residential Air Sealing

Welcome to the HERS Advanced Rater Training Class- Building Energy Science II- Residential Air Sealing. In this course, we will begin with an examination of building performance needs, durable building science methods and moisture transport mechanisms. Building durability, alterations , testing and inspections are detailed and ventilation requirements of ASHRAE 62.2.2007 are covered. Pre air seal review and sealing methods are outlined, with various air sealing products such as spray foam, tapes and hard barriers discussed.

The course includes informative training videos outlining insulation vs. air flow, air sealing methods, and insulation installation practices for walls, attics, raised floors, crawl spaces and basements before concluding with an evaluation of insulation installation.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand performance issues and needs of residential buildings
  • Indentify moisture issues and how to resolve them prior to air sealing
  • Perform a pre air sealing review
  • Be able to perform 1:300 and 1:150 Calculations
  • Know the various types of air sealing and insulation products
  • Understand air sealing and insulation of attics, walls and other air pathways throughout a residence
